Northern Harrier

Circus cyaneus

A trip to open lowlands will often yield a view of a long-tailed raptor gliding near the ground on dihedral wings -- a Northern Harrier! Formerly known as the "Marsh Hawk," the Northern Harrier uses large facial disks and sharp eyesight to listen -- and look -- for small voles in the grass. Look for the diagnostic white rump of this species while in flight.

Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge

Puget Trough

Steigerwald borders the Columbia River in southern Washington State. This 1,000-acre refuge is a great place to see interesting birds, including the White-breasted Nuthatch, House Wren, and Yellow-headed Blackbird, all unusual on the west side of the Cascades. Scan the Columbia River for returning waterfowl.
